귀리 베타글루칸 (Oat 베 타) 이란?
Oat beta glucan is a non-starch polysaccharide present in the cell wall of oat endosperm and dextrin layer and is a small molecular weight dietary fiber. Beta glucan accounts for more than 85% of the cell wall composition of oat endosperm and dextrin layer. Oat beta glucan is a short-chain glucan with a small relative molecular mass, and its relative molecular mass varies from 60,000 to 2,000,000 daltons.
Studies have shown that the dry basis content of bet glucan in oat bran is generally 2.1-3.9%. It is a macromolecular unbranched linear mucopolysaccharide formed by linking β-D glucopyranose units through β-(1→3) and β-(1→4) glycosidic bonds. It contains about 70% β-(1→4) bonds and 30% β-(1→3) bonds.
Oat beta glucan itself is a fiber polysaccharide, and the body does not have the enzymes to break down oat glucan, which is hardly broken down into monosaccharides. Oat beta-glucan becomes gelatinous when dissolved in water, which slows down the absorption of fats and carbohydrates when it enters the digestive tract and enhances satiety.

Tappy et al. demonstrated in a clinical trial that the hypoglycaemic effect of oats and oat bran was mainly attributed to oat β-glucan. Abbasi et al. demonstrated that oat β-glucan could lower postprandial blood glucose concentration and regulate the activity of intestinal glucose transporter protein, providing an effective way to lower blood glucose levels in diabetic patients.

China approved oat beta-glucan powder as a new food ingredient in 2014 for use in all products except baby food.
