Antioxidant
Phloretin has strong antioxidant properties and scavenges free radicals in the skin. Rhizopusin, the glucoside of rhizopus, has also been shown to have antioxidant activity, with 3-hydroxyrhizopus being able to scavenge peroxides, free radicals, and lipid peroxidation. Rhizopusin inhibits the release of nitric oxide from stimulated macrophages and reduces macrophage phagocytosis, with potential anti-inflammatory effects.
Anti-Inflammatory
Phloretin and epicatechin are the strongest inhibitors of cyclooxygenase 1, and rhizopus is a known competitive inhibitor of D-glucose co-transporter proteins, giving rhizopus a potential anti-inflammatory effect.
Sun Protection

In addition to its bacteriostatic activity against pathogenic bacteria, rhizopin is also useful against common skin bacteria.
The MIC of phloretin on both Propionibacterium acnes and Propionibacterium granulosum was 0.5mg/L. Meanwhile, the results of the clinical trial showed that there was a significant reduction of whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and sebum secretion in the subjects after usingphloretin for 4 weeks.
