Beneficial for Joint Degeneration

A study in a rabbit model of osteoarthritis highlighted the role of a combined solution of chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, sodium hyaluronate, and natural type II collagen in maintaining joint health. When natural non-denatured type II collagen was added to the glucosamine solution, articular cartilage degradation was significantly reduced and cartilage appearance and structure improved. The joint condition of the natural non-denatured type II collagen experimental group was also closer to that of healthy joints compared to the control group.

May Improve Knee Discomfort

In a randomized controlled study exploring the efficacy of natural non-denatured type II collagen in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, a three-month intervention (with paracetamol) significantly improved pain compared to a paracetamol-only group. The results showed that the group containing natural non-denatured type II collagen performed better than the control group without the product.

Beneficial for Osteoarthritis

A retrospective observational study of patients with osteoarthritis found that chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine had beneficial effects in reducing cartilage degradation and osteoarthritis progression. Non-denatured type II collagen is a dietary supplement ingredient that has been shown in studies to support bone and joint health by relieving symptoms of stiffness and discomfort, as well as improving mobility. Hydrolyzed or denatured collagen is a peptide component of collagen that has been broken down enzymatically, by heat or pH changes. In contrast, non-denatured type II collagen retains its natural triple-helical conformation and has a molecular weight of approximately 300 kDa, while collagen hydrolysates have a molecular weight range of 2 to 9 kDa.

The structures are different and have different mechanisms of action. Hydrolyzed collagen is more readily absorbed due to its lower molecular weight and is therefore thought to aid cartilage regeneration by providing the raw material for collagen synthesis. In contrast, preclinical studies have shown that non-denatured collagen influences humoral and cellular immune responses through interactions with gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) during oral tolerance.

In Japan, non-denatured type II collagen has been approved as a functional food claim for joint improvement.
