Antibacterial

Chamomile extracts of total flavonoids, total volatile oil, orchid oil azulene, umbelliferolide have different antifungal effects. Chamomile volatile oil part of the inhibitory effect on the larval bacillus is stronger than garlic. Chamomile capitulum hydroalcoholic extract can inhibit the activity of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus and Candida albicans, etc., α-erythromycetinol and nerol tertiary alcohol on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans has an inhibitory effect, chamomile capitulum ethanol extracts of myeloid tetanus virus and herpes has an inhibitory effect as well.

Antioxidant

Chamomile capitata ameliorates paraquat-induced associated lung injury and is a natural antioxidant. Chamomile hydroalcoholic extract improved lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase as well as was able to increase total antioxidant capacity in plasma and lung tissues induced by paraquat-induced changes. The total flavonoid extracts of the heads of both chamomile and Roman chamomile possessed strong antioxidant activity, and the Roman chamomile flavonoid extracts had stronger antioxidant activity than the chamomile flavonoid extracts; whereas the chamomile volatile oil extracts had stronger antioxidant activity than the Roman chamomile volatile oil extracts.
