Treatment and Prevention of Urinary Tract Infections(UTI)

D Mannose is thought to prevent certain bacteria from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract. D Mannose receptors are part of the protective layer of cells in the urinary tract. These receptors can bind to E. coli bacteria and are flushed away during urination, thus preventing adhesion and invasion of urinary tract epithelial cells.

In a 2014 study published in the World Journal of Urology, 308 women with a history of recurrent UTI who had received initial antibiotic therapy were divided into three groups. The first group received 2 grams of pure D mannose powder in 200 milliliters of water daily for six months. The second group received 50 milligrams of furotoxin (an antibiotic) daily, and the third group did not receive any additional treatment.

Overall, 98 patients had recurrent urinary tract infections. Of these women, 15 were in the D mannose group, 21 in the furantoin group, and 62 in the untreated group. Both modalities were well tolerated in patients in both active groups. Overall, 17.9 percent of patients reported minor side effects, with a significantly lower risk of side effects in patients in the D mannose group compared to those in the furotoxin group.

The researchers concluded that pure D mannose powder significantly reduced the risk of UTI recurrence. It may be useful for UTI prevention, although more research is needed to verify these results.
